Pretty smile

Well, Derek & I got to witness again, just an amazing miracle in action. He, Gavin & myself went to Dallas this weekend to hang out with Alissa. Last time we were there, she was starting to communicate & interact but still seemed confused. She couldn't talk, walk on her own or even go to the bathroom on her own.
But what a week it's been!
She can walk (still dizzy so it's assisted), talk with her tracheotomy & lucky for her, shower and go to the bathroom!! You KNOW that must make a huge difference!
When we went to see her, she was sitting up in her bed, drinking juice, saying a few things & just being herself. You can tell she's emotional, but is very aware of what's going on now. And has come to terms with it. Just a week ago, she was depressed about her face & had to be restrained at all times just so she wouldn't pull her tubes out. Now, she's accepted all of it. She even said at one point, "Isn't it crazy how things happen this way?"
Although sad, it's great to hear her talk like this. In a reflective manner. It's a good sign that she is strong enough to handle all the emotional struggles to follow.
She is in therapy b/c she isn't moving normally yet. Still needs to work on walking and brushing her teeth, etc. But she's back to texting. lol.
Her upcoming surgeries consist of:
Repairing eye sockets
Repairing broken nose
Correcting her eye lids-one won't blink & one won't open
removing her trach & feeding tube
and a big one is to repair a torn artery below her ear
Today she will be having her right eye checked again to see if she is regaining vision. With the progress she has made, they've discussed doing a surgery tomorrow, but I don't know which one.
Again, it's just a waiting game.
The good news is, she's doing great, staying positive & will be home soon.

Here's a pic of her yesterday w/her new Coach sunglasses she seems to be loving! She's got her smile back with her pretty teeth :)

Wow what great progress! She's looking great! I cannot imagine still what a long road she has in front of her, but I'm thinking about her as she goes down it.
