Well for those of you wondering, I have a new update on my SIL Alissa. I spent the weekend up in Dallas and did not know what to expect. When I got there, she was so sedated, that I didn't get to see if she had made any progress. I was told she was nodding her head "yes" when asked if she could hear, and was shaking her hands for them to be held.
I was able to see her after she had been cleaned up and her head patched up. I thought they were just fixing up where they had drilled holes, but she actually underwent a brain surgery to fix the exposed brain. The hole in her forehead was from the impact. She looked much better, but still aweful at the same time w/her head shaved and staples from ear to ear. And much other stuff coming out off her head and neck and arms.
She's been on a ventalator until yesterday which is awesome! And you won't believe the progress she has made in just a couple days!
The second day I was there, she was nodding her head, moving her arms to scratch her nose!, moving her legs (so is not paralized!) moving her lips to try and talk, asking for her mom, trying to sit up! and even opened her eyes twice!
Now, she can't talk b/c of her trech & she can't open her eyes b/c of the damage, and she couldn't sit until they got a CT, but now she is able to sit meaning she doesn't have spine damage and they have given her a writing board to write notes on.
Alissa was actually being a little silly w/her softball coach and making funny hand gestures w/attitude that they do when they have a game. And she told her to shut up with her mouth. She hit a nurse and counted to 3 w/her fingers b/c they weren't letting her know when they were going to move her.
Man, that girl is strong and stubborn. I was told last night though that they had to strap her down b/c she's starting to get mad and want up. I guess that's a good thing. She has so much of a fight in her and will not let this change the person she is.
On a great note, she is supposed to have her reconstructive surgery tomorrow to rebuild her face. They are expecting it to be done at once and all the other things will follow over time. Her skin looks great other than her scar she will have on her forehead. So, we're told she will look great in the end and will look the same. Alissa has the best team of surgeons & will be happy to know she has her very own "Dr. Dreamy & Dr. McSteamy!" (she's a huge Grey's Anatomy fan).
Anyways, that's all for now. There's people from all over the place praying for her and the family, and it's obvious what the power of prayer can do. We are all so amazed at how fast she is pulling through.
